Ultrasound is not a required test during pregnancy but it is a valuable one. It establishes a clear due date and helps detect fetal, uterine, and placental defects.

HI,

Im a first time mother and am in my second trimester. I don’t have a bump of any kind and have been getting stomach pains for the past two or three weeks on and off. Should consider a scan to see whats happening or is this normal?

brenda- Usually you can definitely tell the sex at 20 weeks but often an educated guess can be made earlier. — Dr. E

M. Brown – These are issues you shoud discuss with your doctor especially if you are having pain. Women show at different times and it is hard to tell. The top of the uterus should be near the umbilicus or belly button at 20 weeks. The uterus does not even start to come out of the pelvis until after 12 weeks – Dr. E

Hi, I just found out from my pregnancy test that I’m pregnant. I tried to scheduled an appointment for next week but the nurse told me that it is not neccessary to schedule an appointment until week 10 of the pregnancy. Is that true ,since I ‘m anemic and had a history of misscariaged at week 8.And also when I asked about calcium supplement, i was told that i do not need that. Plase clarify. Thanks!

Obstetricians start their prenatal care at different times. Generally for an uncomplicated pregnancy that first visit is between 8 to 10 weeks. I often will offer an earlier visit to date the pregnancy but it is not necessary. Your anemia needs evaluation if not done prior. All you need at this time in your pregnancy is a prenatal vitamin.
